History

Charles Edward Mallen was born at Euston Square, London in 1820. After migrating to Australia in 1854, he became interested in the winery business and in 1859 join the staff of the West End Brewery in Hindley Street.

In 1857 Charles Mallen purchased a large property on the corner of Princes Road and Unley Road, Mitcham and built a two-storey residence and brewery thereon. He lived there until he died in 1909 at the age of 89 years. After his death the brewery was run by the trustees and in 1930 was sold to the Adelaide Brewery. Later the premises were sold to Halls Produce Company. Eventually, the Mitcham Shopping Centre purchased the land, and all the buildings except this residence.

Mr Walter Mallen, of Fullarton, grandson of Charles Mallen, remembers his visits to the old home and the cellars, which now for the covered car park and lower level of the Mitcham Shopping Centre. Members of the Mallen family are delighted that their remaining link with so much of their past has been retained and restored. This building is truly a heritage building as far as Mitcham is concerned.

The present owners have taken great care in the restoration of the building and have renamed it Waverley House, The name Waverley was adopted from a Sydney suburb in which Mr Charles Mallen lived prior to settling in Adelaide.
